Since the pilot began, we've been receiving a number of calls asking why only 500k for $35, why 84k for free and why not WiMax.
This week I'll address the "Why only 500k?"
True, numbers wise 500k does not match what digital cable or DSL services say they could provide at their introductory prices. We started with 500k to provide a balanced service to all users. Once the full build is in progress and we have steady customers we will look at increasing the speeds to equipment limitations.
Also, by keeping it metered at 500k with initial download burst of 1mb, we can provide a more consistent service to customers. No one customer can take up all the bandwidth while downloading a movie or TV show. Personally, I pay for 6mb cable internet service in my own home. I live in a rural area near Hell, MI. My house is third from the end on the cable and utility lines. I run speed tests from speakeasy and only get above 1.2mb down or 300k up when I can't sleep at 3am. I can't wait until we're providing Wireless Washtenaw in my area. With the wireless network, no customer is last in line.
Many of our pilot participants currently have existing cable or DSL internet service and have been comparing the two. Those having DSL have responded with "Better than my DSL connection". Those with cable internet say they really can't tell the difference.
One of our employees was the first to have it installed in Saline. She swapped out her cable without telling her family. She says her husband and children have actually commented on how well the network is responding lately. She has yet to tell them they are using the Wireless Washtenaw network. Its kind of running joke to see if they'll ever notice.
As far as competitive, once past the introductory months, DSL and Cable prices jump dramatically. A 20/20 employee has Internet access through one of the local cable companies. After the introductory offer was over his internet bill jumped from $20/mo to $57/mo. Too rich for his blood, he called to cancel and they offered 300k up and down for $30/month. 20/20 will be offering faster speeds plus wireless access throughout the entire county for just $5 more.
20/20 Communications was selected by Washtenaw County to provide county wide Wireless Internet access.
There are four (4) phases to Wireless Washtenaw:
- Pilot
- Pre-deployment
- Deployment
- Customer acquisition and retention
The phases will begin to overlap as portions of them are completed throughout the county.
The project is currently in the eleventh week of the Pilot Phase. The pilot is scheduled through February.
