Rural county residents have contacted us about a rumor of a different, higher pricing structure for rural areas. This is definitely not true!!! After the pilot, the rates for all areas will be the same. It is mandated in the contract we signed with the county.
Residential non-business pricing is as follows:
Residential Households and mobile accounts with speeds up to 500k and additional advertising will be $35/month.
Residential Households and mobile accounts with speeds up to 500k without additional advertising will be $50/month
Residential Households and mobile accounts with speeds up to 84k with advertising will be Free.
There will also be a daily rate of $8 and a weekly rate of $15 for visitors. There will be business rates as well.
The advertising mentioned for the free, $35, daily and weekly rates are inserted as banners or will replace existing advertising on web pages. They may also present a web page before getting to the site you requested. A good example of this type of advertising can be seen on the Ann Arbor news and New York Times web sites.
Not all users will receive additional advertising all the time. I'll address that in an upcoming update.
It's important to note, we will not insert pop-ups or download advertising software to your computer. However, we cannot control pop-ups generated by the sites you visit.
Another rumor is the radio required for residential customers in rural areas will cost $500 or more. This radio is often referred to as Customer Premise Equipment or CPE. This CPE will receive the secure 802.11a signal. During the pilot we are testing a number of radios to determine the best one for various conditions. The prices of these CPE's are unknown at this time but due to the volume we'll be purchasing we don't expect them to cost more than $180.
The 802.11a signal is secured and cannot be accessed by anything other than the radios we recommend and install. Residents with an 802.11a card on their computer will not be able to access the network on this signal at this time.
20/20 Communications was selected by Washtenaw County to provide county wide Wireless Internet access.
The project is currently in the sixth week of the Pilot Phase. The pilot is scheduled through February.
