Pilot Update.
All Radios are installed in Ann Arbor and Manchester. The Saline 5.7 GHz radios are also installed. We just received tentative approval from MDOT to install Saline's final radio on a light pole in the downtown area for the 2.4 GHz WiFi transmission.
Siemens is now performing acceptance testing for the radios, the Wireless Information Platform (WIP) and the Network Management System (NMS). This testing is scheduled for completion on November 30, 2006. It will require engineers to disrupt service for each radio at different times to test fail over, backup systems and monitoring systems.
This past week, as some Ann Arbor radios were activated, downtown residents could see the network broadcasts for the Free Wireless Washtenaw signal on their notebooks. Some were bold enough to actually sign on. On Tuesday 120 users surfed the net on Wireless Washtenaw. Although this was exciting to see, we want to make sure all systems are fully tested, secure and operational before potential customers begin their experience with the network. In light of this, we will be limiting access to Siemens engineers only until the network is ready for the user portion of the pilot.
For the next week, 20/20 will contact potential participants for pilot participation. This part of the pilot will be available from December 1, through February 2007. The pilot is our opportunity to fine tune our network. At this time we are not looking for customers as much as we are looking for partners in helping us determine the pilots' strengths and weaknesses. We are limiting the testing to 30 Residents in Manchester strategically located within 3 miles of the Manchester Water Tower, 30 Residents in Saline Strategically located within 3 miles of the Henry Street Water tower, and 440 within the State street, Main Street, Huron and South U area. During the pilot, access to the network will only be granted to these 500 people. Ann Arbor participants could live anywhere in the county and access the network when downtown.
We are testing all portions of the Wireless Washtenaw offering. Free and Fee based. Fee based offerings are monthly, daily and weekly. We are required to test the billing process so fee based customers will be charged the following. $2.00 for monthly, $1.50 for weekly and a $1.00 for daily. During this period, 20/20 will provide home mounted radios to receive the signal in the Saline and Manchester pilots. On March 1, pilot participants on the monthly plan wishing to remain on the network will be charged the normal monthly fee of $35 and $235 or less for the radio mounted on their homes. We are still negotiating with the vendor for a lower price on the customer radios. |
