We are continuing to install radios in the Ann Arbor, Saline and Manchester Pilot areas. All radio installations are scheduled for completion on Friday November 10. Acceptance and performance testing will begin on November 13th and run through the end of the month.
Beginning the first week in December we will ask residents for assistance in the pilot areas. The pilot is our opportunity to fine tune our network. At this time we are not looking for customers as much as we are looking for partners in helping us determine the pilots' strengths and weaknesses. We will need resindents to test and report on their connectivity, speed, and ease of use for both the free and fee based service. To test the billing service for the faster fee based connections, we are planning to offer a number of residents in each of the pilot areas the faster service for an extremely low fee.
Ann Arbor Pilot. Radios are installed on street lamps or traffic signal arms on Ashley and Liberty, on Main street from Washington to William, On Fourth from Huron to Liberty, on Division from Huron to William and on State Street from Huron to South U. Each radio will transmit 300 to 600 feet depending on obstructions. These radios will transmit the 802.11b and g wifi signal in the 2.4GHz range.
Saline Pilot. There are two separate types of signals in the Saline pilot. For home users, Radios are installed on the Henry street water tower and will broadcast in the 802.11a Pre-wimax WiFi signal covering an area 360 degrees for 3 miles. Residents will need a radio mounted on their home to receive this signal. More to come on the required radios in future updates.
The downtown business Saline area on US-12 will also receive the 802.11b and G wifi signal on the 2.4 GHz band.
Manchester Pilot. Radios are installed on the Manchester water tower and will broadcast the pre-wimax 802.11a signal on the 5.7 GHz band. Residents will need to install a radio on their homes to receive and translate the signal. |
