20/20 Communications was selected by Washtenaw County as its private sector partner in the Wireless Washtenaw initiative.

The goal of Wireless Washtenaw is to provide free and fee based WiFi Internet service to all county residents, businesses and guests throughout the county’s 720 square miles. To accomplish this task, 20/20 Communications will establish over 2000 broadcast points to transmit the 802.11 b/g/a signals over the 2.4 and 5.7 GHz frequencies.

People wishing to use the service will be able to self sign-up for the free or fee based Internet access by simply connecting to the Wireless Washtenaw SSID and selecting their choice of service.

The free service is 84kbps. 20/20 Communications is offering this free service in exchange for broadcast equipment mounting rights on county, township, city and village assets. 84kbps is roughly twice the speed of dial-up in an urban setting and nearly four (4) times the speed achieved in Washtenaw county’s rural settings.

There will be several fee based services including: Daily 500kbps, Weekly 500kbps, Monthly 500kbps and a business offering with T1 class service.

Residents and Businesses will require a CPE (radio) mounted outside their dwelling to bring the service into their locations.
